Caddo Lake State Park

March 16-18 we trekked to northeast Texas just 20 miles from the Louisiana border and 40 miles from Arkansas to visit Caddo Lake State Park. Caddo Lake is the largest natural lake in Texas. It is known for bass fishing, cypress trees and east Texas rednecks. We arrived Friday night and checked into site 46. Our site was across the road from Mill Pond and near the parking area for canoeing and the fishing pier. There is an old wooden bridge you must cross into the tent camping area. The site had tall pine and oak trees providing lots of shade. The kids had a wonderful time playing with the caterpillars that were crawling everywhere. We stopped at a convenience store near the park entrance to buy wood since there was no burn ban. This is the first trip in a long time that we have been able to enjoy a camp fire. Saturday morning we went on a nice long hike through the forest. The trail was well maintained with a good portion of it gravel. There were a few streams and bridges to cross and lots of dogwood trees in bloom.
That afternoon, Shawn and the kids went fishing while I enjoyed a nap. The next morning we started back home after a pancake and bacon breakfast.
Overall Caddo was a nice park for spring camping. I could see the bugs being bad in the summer as the bathrooms were already full of crane flies. We did find a beautiful luna moth by the bathrooms and saw some birds in the morning. This is a great park to come with a boat and fish. Much too swampy for swimming though.
